Fluency

Fluency refers to the smooth, effortless flow of speech. Stuttering (or stammering) is a fluency disorder where this flow is interrupted by repetitions (e.g., “c-c-can”), prolongations (“ssssometimes”), or blocks (getting stuck with no sound). It can also include physical tension, avoidance of words, or negative feelings about speaking. Stuttering usually starts in early childhood but can persist or even appear later, and it often fluctuates with excitement, stress, or fatigue.

At Hong Kong Speech Therapy, we provide evidence-based, compassionate therapy for children, teens, and adults who stutter – helping them speak more smoothly, feel more confident, and communicate freely in any situation.

Child Communicating

What Are Speech & Language?

Speech – is how we say sounds and/or words.

  • Articulation – how we form and produce sounds to create words. Sometimes we need help with placement of tongue, lips, and other articulators to produce the correct sounds

  • Phonology – the speech patterns we use. Sometimes we substitute letters (replace ‘r’ for ‘w’ in ‘rabbit’) or omit endings (dropping the ‘t’ in ‘cat’).

  • Fluency – the flow or rhythm of speech. Sometimes we experience repetitions (where sounds or words are repeated, like ‘c-c-c-at’), prolongations (where sounds & syllables are stretched out, like ‘ssssstop’), or blocks (sudden stops in speech).

Language – is what we say and how we make sense of what others say.

  • Receptive Language – understanding what is said. Following directions, understanding vocabulary and their meaning, understanding stories.

  • Expressive Language – using language. Putting thoughts into words and sentences, asking questions, telling stories, making requests.

  • Social Language – using language appropriately in a social setting. Knowing ules of a conversation – initiating, maintaining, ending conversations, staying on topic, turn-taking, understanding nonverbal communication like body language, perspective taking, tone of voice.

How Help with
Fluency & Stuttering

Smoother, More Natural Speech

Clients learn gentle techniques to reduce repetitions, prolongations, and blocks, leading to noticeably easier speech within weeks. Many children and adults report speaking with greater ease in class, at work, or socially after the first term.

Age-Appropriate &
Evidence-Based Approaches

Young children enjoy the Lidcombe Program or Palin PCI; teens and adults benefit from fluency-shaping or stuttering-modification methods tailored to their lifestyle. We choose the approach that best fits the individual, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

Confidence Without Avoidance

Therapy helps clients face feared words and situations instead of hiding, dramatically lowering anxiety around speaking. Clients often say they finally feel “free” to order food, answer the phone, or present without dread.

Family & Self-Management Tools

Parents learn supportive talking styles; teens and adults gain self-monitoring strategies and desensitisation exercises for long-term control. Short, practical home activities and video feedback make progress steady and sustainable.

Hong Kong-Relevant Support

We address bilingual stuttering patterns (common in Cantonese-English speakers) and real-life demands like oral exams, job interviews, or public speaking. Clients leave ready to communicate confidently in school, university, or professional settings across both languages.
